Description:
Plants 3-6 dm tall. Auricles minute or absent; leaf blades 2-5 mm wide. Inflorescence cylindrical, rachis breaking apart at nodes in fruit; spikelets falling separately with adjacent internode. Glumes 6-11 mm long, keeled along one side, keel extended as an apical awn, awns of lowermost spikelets 0.5-2.5 cm long, those of uppermost ones 4-7 cm long; lemma apices mucronate to awned, awns, if present, 0.5-5 cm long.  Flowers May - June
 

Distribution:
Santa Cruz Island and throughout western North America; native of Europe.

Rare; disturbed flats, grassy swales, hillsides; coastal scrub, grasslands; 250-300 ft (75-90 m).

Central Valley near Cottonwood Canyon and University of California Field Station.  First collected on hillside southeast of Field Station in June 1973.
