Description:
Perennial herbs, sometimes flowering first year and appearing annual, 1-60 dm tall; stems decumbent, sometimes trailing and rooting at nodes. Ligules 1-5 mm long; leaf blades 2-8 mm wide. Inflorescence narrow, spikate, branches appressed to erect, with spikelets to near their bases. Glumes 1-2.5 mm long; lemmas 1-1.5 mm long, awnless; palea slightly shorter than lemma. Flowers May-Aug.

Distribution:
Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, Anacapa, Santa Barbara, and Santa Catalina islands; Cedros Island; throughout North America; native of Europe.

 

Santa Cruz Island

Occasional; stream banks, moist floodplains, freshwater seeps; riparian communities; 20-1000 ft (6-305 m).

Widely scattered locations throughout island.  First collected in Valdez Canyon in June 1930.
