Channel
Islands Restoration provides
volunteer opportunities for conservation minded individuals at one
of California’s most spectacular natural landscapes. This is a
particularly wonderful opportunity for school or youth groups that
emphasize education in ecology or have a service-learning
component. Volunteers make single-day or multi-day trips to the island in areas
not normally open to the public. They will receive hands-on
experience with non-native plant removal while learning about
environmental restoration, conservation biology and island
biogeography. Participants also receive detailed information
about the Channel Islands, including a slide show highlighting natural
history, endemic animal and plant species and restoration issues.
Housing is provided
at the UC Santa Barbara Reserve station in the island’s Central
Valley, and includes
rooms with bunk beds and full kitchen facilities. Boat
transportation to Santa Cruz Island takes approximately two hours
from Ventura Harbor, and passengers often enjoy marine mammal
sightings along the way. Trips to the island are typically one to five days in duration, depending on your group's
requirements.
The project has
worked with more than 500 volunteers in the past four years, including
many school and youth groups. These groups include the Los Angeles
Conservation Corps, Santa Monica Mountains National Park Youth, Paso
Robles High School, Happy Valley School in Ojai, Ventura County Boys
and Girls Club, Manzanar Youth Conservation Crew and “Green Teens”
from the Santa Barbara Watershed Resource Center. In addition,
college groups from UC Santa Barbara and the California Institute of
Technology have performed service work with the project.
